Japan is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies
to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and
Russia.[1] The characters that make up Japan's
name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes referred to as
the "Land of the Rising Sun". [2] In 1603, after decades of civil warfare, the Tokugawa shogunate (a
military-led, dynastic government) ushered in a long period of relative
political stability and isolation from foreign influence. [3]Japan opened its ports after signing the Treaty of
Kanagawa with the US in 1854 and began to intensively modernize and
industrialize. [4]A major economic power, Japan has the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and fourth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer.[5]
